Get Your Flirt on in the New Year

The most talked about single’s subject is “how to date in 2021”. We’ve got you covered - yes, it is important to always show up as your best self when meeting someone over FaceTime or Zoom call. We’ve said it before, it’s still true AND there’s more to virtual dating than your background and your appearance. It’s also about going the extra mile. You can impact a person’s impression of you simply by adapting your behavior. Go beyond conversation and get your flirt on!

We know, we know… flirting. The ever so daunting task of batting your eyelashes or flipping your hair… but that isn’t the kind of flirting we are talking about. On a virtual date, you have the unique opportunity to have a genuine and authentic conversation with someone. So, when the time comes, how do you show your date you are interested in them through a screen?

Body Language

It’s Just Lunch Dating & Relationship Coach, Jolene Beaton, says that body language is one of the key factors in communicating interest, whether it be virtually or in person. So, when you’re on a virtual date, make sure that you show more than just your face.

Open your body language to your date. It can show that you are listening to what they are saying, while also showing them you are interested. A few key ways to show you are interested with your body is to smile - a lot! You can also lean into the camera slightly, showing them that you are fully engaged in what they are saying. The more of your frame and personality that you can put into your actions, the better.

Be Attentive

There’s nothing worse than talking to someone when you feel they aren’t listening! Make sure you are not distracting yourself with other things in your home. Being fully present on your date is so important, especially now. Giving them your full attention will show you are genuinely interested and want to get to know them. Someone who shows up with effort can create a fun and interactive environment for a date. Plus, showing interest is sexy!

Spoken Word

There are two ways to work spoken word into showing interest. The first is in the questions you ask. This is going to be one of the best ways to communicate your interest on a virtual date. Without the ability to use physical touch, you are going to have to rely on showing them you’re interested based on the questions you ask.

Some examples of playful questions to ask on a first date are:

Q: If you could take a roadtrip right now, where would you go?

Q: What brings you the most joy in your life?

Q: What is your idea of a perfect day date?

Q: Okay, I want you to brag for a minute, what are you super good at?

The second way to show interest through spoken word is through how you respond to the questions they ask. The art of flirting is about playful responses that show the light and fun side of who you are. It’s your natural charm and wit! So make sure when you are responding to basic questions, you are giving your date a little more to work with.

To show you how to keep responses positive and flirty, Jolene shares how she would answer typical questions on a date:

Q: What do you do for work? A: I am _______. I love my work, I feel challenged and inspired, however, I am really in this great place in my life where I have the freedom to focus on dating and hopefully a fun adventure with someone.

Q: What are some of your hobbies/interests? A: I love Crossfit. The place I go,as cliche as it sounds, is really like a family now. I love the athlete mindset and the optimal health over a lifetime outlook to fitness. There are actually a ton of husbands/wives that workout together, it is super cool to see them connecting and challenging each other.

Q: How have you been spending your time the past couple months? A: I am fairly extroverted, so I have been enjoying the slower pace, it has made me get out in nature, spend better time with only one friend at a time or my parents. What I love about dating in this space, is that it allows for building a deeper connection with someone.

Q: I had a really great time getting to know you, would you want to do it again sometime? A: Yes! And I have an idea...why don't we both come up with the most creative COVID date idea and text each other tomorrow to see who's idea we should do first! ....who knows, maybe we will end up planning on both!

Remember when answering questions asked of you, frame them for your genuine self. Show your date the best of you! Now it’s time to get your virtual flirt on and make 2021 the year you meet the one!
